Katikati D Women are National Champs! They become the first ladies team from the club to lift the trophy, and team captain Toni Connelly was delighted after a long build up "Who would have thought four months ago, that this group of amazing humans would take on the country's best D Grade Ladies, take out the title and bring home the cup". It wasn't all plain sailing for the top-seeded team. They started strong with 5-0 and 4-1 wins in their first two ties. Then, after a 3-2 win and a 2-3 loss, they faced a must-win tie to give them a chance of a countback victory. Lining up against 2nd seeds Browns Bay, the girls fired up to take the first three matches, securing the titles for the Bay!
The C grade womens draw saw two Bay teams face off in the semi final. Eliminations winner Mount managed to pip invited team Devoy in a nail-biting tie that came down to the wire! Mount then went on to the final where they were extremely close to taking the title, only succumbing in the 5th game of the 5th match! An outstanding effort to make the final is such a hotly contested grade.
This year the Bay had 13 teams across the country in 'the best event in squash'. Lasting memories and friendships are inevitably formed, and no doubt the stories will get bigger as the years go on.
