The Devoy Squash & Fitness team have clinched the Bay's 4th national men's B grade title in the past 8 years. The national finals were hosted by Whakatane, and the Devoy team went into the event as 3rd seeds. After upsetting the 2nd seeds from Kapiti in pool play, then taking out Eden Epsom in the semi-final, they lined up against the top seeds Christchurch Football in the big dance. In front of a packed gallery the team stepped up to the occasion with a tight 3-2 victory sealing the trophy for the Bay.
Four other BOP teams made it to the final, with some incredibly close ties not quite falling for our players. The Mount D Men had a heart-breaking loss in the 5th game of the 5th match, but their coach was incredibly proud of their efforts “After leaving everything on court, it just wasn’t their day with Belmont coming away the winners but our boys very deserving Runner Ups”.
10 Teams, 4 Runner-ups and one title in a very tough competition. Not a bad haul for the Bay this year!
