Bay of Plenty's Amanda Landers-Murphy has claimed a Gold Medal at the Commonwealth Games in Australia! Amanda teamed up with singles gold medalist and good friend Joelle King to win the Womens Doubles. The pair have won the last two World Doubles titles and were favourites for the event. The suffered a shock loss in the first round to a young Malaysian pair, but bounced back in spectacular fashion to storm through the rest of their matches to take the gold.
Amanda is a proud member of the Geyser City Squash club in Rotorua. She was under intense pressure from her opponents throughout the event with her being a tactical target as the perceived weaker player in the pairing. However, she was able to hold her own and at times dominate her opposition, pulling off some spectacular shots hat left the crowd and commentary team gasping.
Amanda returns home briefly before heading off overseas to continue her career on the PSA (Professional Squash Association) Tour. A welcome home and celebration function will be held at Geyser City Squash Club on Wednesday 18 April at 6pm. There is no charge and everyone is welcome to come along and see the medal and congratulate Amanda.
